SHERRIN ESPLANADE UPGRADES

New dedicated shared path for pedestrians and bicycle traffic

This project will serve the community by improving the overall aesthetic and functionality of the Sherrin Esplanade for both locals and tourists

Location:
Cameron Creek Road. 3.2 km North-West of Cooktown.

Scope:

The Sherrin Esplanade Upgrades Project is separated into two sections:

Section 1 encompasses approximately the first 430m of Sherrin Esplanade and includes a new dedicated shared path for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, formalised parking, upgrades to the existing pavement such as sealing and associated drainage works and street lighting. Construction works associated with this project are largely completed to date.

Section 2 connects the first 430m of Sherrin Esplanade with the intersection of Hogg Street and Adelaide Street including the roundabout located adjacent to reconciliation rocks. The project is currently in the design phase and it is anticipated that the project cover elements such as:

  • Concrete footpaths
  • Realignment of existing roadway
  • Sealing of pavement surface
  • Scour protection
  • Instillation of sediment control

Sherrin Esplanade is currently a preferred dog-walking route with the locals as they walk their dogs to the dog park located near the Hogg/Adelaide Street intersection. Sherrin Esplanade is also and attractor for tourism with Reconciliation Rocks, Anzac Park, The Gulbuuygu ‘All Together’ monument and the Bama Ancestral Elder monument located along the link.

Increasing the functionality of the road is expected to provide a more welcoming environment for tourists as they explore Cooktown. It will also provide the locals with an alternate sealed route for events and an option to travel off the main road.

Budget:

Total Project Budget = $ 1.3M*

*Does not include costs for construction of Section 2. TBA upon completed design and tender period.
